When I sit down to plan my day, I’m already overwhelmed by the long list of tasks, priorities and responsibilities I must somehow work through. But then I stop and think about this quote by James Patterson that he wrote in his book, Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas:
‘Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls … are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered.’
― James Patterson, Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas
I’ve never read Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas, but I’ve often come across that quote. Its philosophy on family, particularly my role as a parent being a glass ball that I never want to drop, will always stay with me. It reminds me of what’s important.
