DEAR ARLO

Adventures in Dadding

It begins immediately.

There’s no transition period, no trial run, no supervised training, no e-learning module and no simulation that you can f**k up as many times as you need to until you get it right.

As soon as the midwife hands you your newborn baby, you are responsible for keeping it alive.

Picking up moments after Dear Dory ends, Dear Arlo: Adventures in Dadding continues the story of one dad and his journal as he strives to survive the first year of parenthood, blundering his way through bottle-sterilising, night feeds and some cataclysmic nappy changes – all while a pandemic sweeps across the planet.

FAQ's

Tell me about Dear Arlo.

Dear Arlo is the second book in the Adventures in Dadding series, a series of parenting memoirs told from a dad’s point of view, written in the style of a journal. Dear Arlo covers the first year of parenthood from birth to first birthday. Check out Dear Dory (book one in the series) if you’re interested in what pregnancy is like from a soon-to-be first-time dad’s point of view.

When is Dear Arlo set?

November 2019 to November 2020. Yes, Covid-19 features heavily. I talk a lot about what it’s like to be a first-time father during the pandemic.

Who is Dear Arlo for?

Like Dear Dory, Dear Arlo is for anyone who’s a parent or a soon-to-be parent, or anyone thinking about becoming a parent – or anyone who fancies having a laugh at my expense.

What will readers get out of reading Dear Arlo?

A fly-on-the-wall insight into what it’s like to raise a child for the first year of its life. The book covers many topics: sleep deprivation, routines, feeding, shared parental leave, the practical aspects of looking after a baby and the emotional journey that fatherhood invariably takes you on – including all the ups and downs. Oh, and a lot of dramatic nappy changes.

This is now the second book you’ve written that features some in-depth commentary on your partner, where you once again refrain from pulling any punches – surely she must have left you by now, yes?

Surprisingly, she still hasn’t.

Is there anything else readers should be aware of?

Yes. I swear a lot in this book. But in a totally funny and endearing manner …
